How to Better Organize Your Space

Simple Ways to Maintain Order

What are the reasons for disorganization at home? Time is the most common culprit – people might be too busy to put things in their proper place. Eventually, though, the mental list of “things to deal with later” can become overwhelming – you have to start somewhere, but how?

We’ve got some tips for you.

Conduct an Informal Inventory

Sometimes, disorganization stems from the fact there aren’t designated places or containers for items in the home. For example, without a magazine rack, magazines may pile up on the kitchen island. Without a shoe rack or closet organizer, shoes may end up in a jumbled pile on the floor.

The purpose of the informal inventory is to determine whether you need to purchase items that will help you get organized. Also, you may find that you’re willing to part with some things in your home that don’t seem essential, and organizing is always easier when you have less “stuff.”

Where Does Clutter Collect?

A lot of people have a “junk drawer” in the kitchen that contains miscellaneous items like rubber bands, pens, scissors, and toothpicks. If you have a junk drawer and it’s not disrupting your daily life, don’t worry about organizing it. But if that junk drawer happens to be in your desk – or if the entire desk is a cluttered mess – it’s time to organize.

Keep financial records for three to seven years (or longer, if your accountant advises), but get rid of any unnecessary paper. Shred any documents that contain your personal information. If you haven’t already done so, set up paperless billing and statements with your bank and creditors. You can also opt-out of junk mail and credit offer letters online.

Get a desk drawer organizer with compartments for pens, paperclips, and other small items.

Prepare in Advance

If it’s hard to find time for organization, one easy way to create more time for yourself is to make meals in advance and freeze them for future use. Then you’ll have at least a few nights a week that require no dinner preparation or clean-up.

Set a Schedule

Organization doesn’t have to be a daylong chore. Commit to organizing for 10 to 15 minutes a day, and add a reminder to your calendar. Some smartphone apps for organization are even better at keeping people on-track – they remind you of organization tasks and send you progress reports.
