5 Questions to Ask When Moving to a New Apartment

Common Renters' Questions

Asking the right questions before signing your new lease can help streamline the process and minimize the normal stresses associated with moving.

Make sure you get the answers to the following five questions prior to move-in day.

1. What am I responsible for and how do I pay?

Depending on the apartment you choose, in addition to your rent, you may also be responsible for paying certain costs of garbage removal, water, or other services, and may have separate payment policies for electric, gas, and cable service. Understanding what payments you’ll be responsible for and making sure you make arrangements for the transfer of any utilities in your name can minimize stress and service disruptions. Additionally, ask about acceptable methods of rent payments as many apartment communities accept payments electronically for your convenience.

2. What is parking like?

Having a safe and secure spot to park your vehicle matters, so be sure to ask about the parking situation at your apartment. For instance, Union Green features the added convenience of garage parking.

3. What's your pet policy?

If you have animals or are hoping to have animals someday soon, you'll want to make sure you live somewhere that's pet-friendly. Not all pet policies are the same, so make sure you understand the regulations regarding size, type, and number of pets you can have in your home. It's also helpful to ask about what kind of pet accommodations exist at the complex. For example, is there plenty of outdoor walking space or a dog park?

4. Who do I contact if there is a problem in my apartment?

Whether you have a clogged toilet, get locked out of your apartment, or are dealing with some other snafu, you'll want to know exactly who to contact for speedy assistance. Our apartment homes are furnished with quality, updated appliances and fixtures, but just like any home, sometimes issues pop up. That's why our friendly front office and maintenance workers are always ready to help.

Our communities offer easy online resident portals that make submitting a maintenance request a breeze!

5. What kind of changes can I make to my apartment?

If you like to make your space feel like your own, be sure to ask about the kinds of changes, if any, you can make inside the apartment. Most communities will likely have specific policies regarding wall fixtures, painting, and other interior alterations.
